Step by step Pattern

  • The instructions are written for the smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes, the instructions will be written thus ( ).
  • Numbers for each size are shown in the same color throughout the pattern. When only one number is given in black, it applies to all sizes.
  • Notes: 1. Fronts and back of cardi are worked in one piece to armholes, then divided for fronts and back.
  • 2. Sleeves are worked in joined rounds directly from armholes.
  • 3. The hood is worked back and forth in rows directly from the top edge of the cardi.
  • 4. Buttonholes and button bands are shown for the boy’s sweater. Refer to the instructions in parentheses for a girl’s sweater.

BODY

  • Ch 64 (70-76-84).
  • 1st row: (RS). 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end of chain. Turn. 63 (69-75-83) sc.
  • 2nd row: Ch 1. 1 scbl in each st to end of row. Turn.
  • Rep last row until work from beg measures 6 (7-8-9)” [15 (18-20.5- 23) cm], ending on a WS row.
  • RIGHT FRONT
  • 1st row: (RS). Ch 1. 1 scbl each of first 15 (17-18-20) sc. Turn. Leave rem sts unworked. 15 (17-18-20) sc.
  • 2nd row: Ch 1. 1 scbl in each st to end of row. Turn. Rep the last row until the armhole measures 3¾ (4¾-5¾-6¾)” [9.5 (12-14.5-17) cm], ending on a WS row.
  • Neck shaping: 1st row: (RS). Ch 1.
  • Skip first sc. 1 scbl in each st to end of row. Turn. 14 (16-17-19) sc.
  • 2nd row: Ch 1. 1 scbl in each sc to last sc. Turn. Leave rem sc unworked.
  • Rep the last 2 rows once more. 11 (13- 14-16) sc. Fasten off.
  • BACK
  • 1st row: (RS). Join yarn with sl st in first unworked st of body. Ch 1. 1 scbl in same st as sl st. 1 scbl in each of next 16 (17-19-21) sc. PM on last st made. 1 scbl in each of the next 16 (17-19-21) sc. Turn. Leave rem sts unworked. 33 (35-39-43) sc.
    Note: Move the marker up as each row is completed.
  • 2nd row: Ch 1. 1 scbl in each st to end of row. Turn.
  • Rep the last row until the armhole measures 5 (6-7-8)” [12.5 (15-18- 20.5) cm], ending on a WS row.
  • Fasten off. Leave a marker in place to indicate the back center of the hood.
  • LEFT FRONT
  • 1st row: (RS). Join yarn with sl st in first unworked st of body. Ch 1. 1 scbl in same st as sl st. 1 scbl in each sc to end of row. Turn. 15 (17- 18-20) sc.
  • 2nd row: Ch 1. 1 scbl in each st to end of row. Turn. Rep the last row until the armhole measures 3¾ (4¾-5¾-6¾)” [9.5 (12-14.5-17) cm], ending on a WS row.
  • Neck shaping: 1st row: (RS). Ch 1. 1 scbl in each sc to last sc. Turn. Leave rem sc unworked. 14 (16- 17-19) sc.
  • 2nd row: Ch 1. Skip first sc. 1 scbl in each st to end of row. Turn. Rep the last 2 rows once more. 11 (13- 14-16) sc. Fasten off.
  • Shoulder Seam: With RS of right front and back held tog and working through both thicknesses, join yarn with sl st in first st at outer edge. Sl st in each of next 3 (4-5-6) sc. Fasten off. A rep for another shoulder. 25 (25-27-29) sc left for back neck. 7 (8-8-9) sc left for each front neck.

SLEEVES

  • Notes: To keep the look of the fabric the same as for Body, turn after joining at the end of each rnd.
  • To Join all rnds with sl st to first sc.
  • 1st rnd: With RS facing, join yarn with sl st at the lower edge of the armhole opening. Working in ends of rows, work 30 (32-36-38) sc evenly spaced around. Join. Turn.
  • 2nd to 4th rnds: Ch 1. Working in both loops, 1 sc in each of the first 3 sc. 1 scbl in each sc to last 3 sts. Working in both loops, 1 sc in each of the last 3 sc. Join. Turn.
  • 5th rnd: Ch 1. 1 scbl in each sc around. Join. Turn. Rep last rnd until sleeve from pick up rnd measures 3½ (4-5-5)” [4 (10-12.5-12.5) cm], turning at the end of each rnd.
  • Next rnd: Ch 1. Scbl2tog. 1 scbl in each sc to last 2 sc. Scbl2tog. Join. Turn. 28 (30-34-36) sts.
  • Next rnd: Ch 1. 1 scbl in each st around. Join. Turn. Rep the last 2 rnds 5 (5-6-7) times, turning at the end of each rnd. 18 (20- 22-22) sc.
  • Next rnd: Ch 1. 1 scbl in each sc around. Join. Turn. Rep last rnd until sleeve measures 7½ (8½-9½-10½)” [19 (21.5-24- 26.5) cm], ending on an RS row. Do not turn.
  • Next rnd: Ch 1. Working in both loops, 1 sc in each sc around. Join. Fasten off.

Hood

  • 1st row: (WS). Join yarn with sl st in first sc of Left front. Ch 1. 1 scbl in same st as sl st. 1 scbl in each of next 5 (6-6-7) sc. 2 scbl in next sc. PM on first st of the 2-sc group just made. 1 sc in seam. PM on SC just made. 2 scbl in the next sc. PM on 2nd st of the 2-sc group just made. 1 scbl in each of next 23 (23-25-27) sc. 2 scbl in next st. PM on first st of the 2-sc group just made. 1 sc in seam. PM on sc just made. 2 scbl next sc.   • 2nd to 5th rows: Ch 1. 1 scbl in each sc to end of row. Turn.
  • 6th row: Ch 1. 1 scbl in each sc to next marked sc. (2 scbl in next marked sc. PM on first st of the 2-sc group just made) 3 times. 1 scbl in each sc to next marked sc. (2 scbl in next marked sc.   • Next row: Ch 1. 1 scbl in each sc to end of row. Turn. Rep last row until Hood from pick up row measures 7½ (8-8½-9)” [19 (20.5-21.5-23) cm], ending on a RS row. Fasten off.

FINISHING

  • Pin all pieces to measurements. Cover with a damp cloth, leaving the cloth to dry.
  • Fold the hood in half at the center marked st, and working through both thicknesses, sew the last row edges tog.
  • Buttonhole Band

Note: Instructions in parentheses are for the girl’s sweater.

  • 1st row: With RS (WS) facing and working in ends of rows of the left (right) front, join yarn with sl st in the first row at the lower edge. Ch 1. Work 34 (40-44-49) sc evenly spaced across the front edge. Turn.
  • 2nd row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each of first 6 sts. *Ch 2. Skip the next 2 sts. 1 sc in each of the next 4 sc. Rep from * 3 times more. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn. 4 buttonholes. Fasten off.

Button Band

  • Note: Instructions in parentheses are for the girl’s sweater.
  • 1st row: With RS (WS) facing and working in ends of rows of right (left) front, join yarn with sl st in the first row at the lower edge. Ch 1. Work 34 (40-44-49) sc evenly spaced across the front edge. Turn.
  • 2nd to 4th rows: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn. Do not fasten off.

Edging

  • 1st rnd: Working on the opposite side of foundation ch, 3 sc in first ch. 1 sc in each ch to the last ch. 3 sc in the last ch. Working up the first front, *1 sc in each sc to next ch-2 sp (buttonhole).
  • 2 sc in next ch-2 sp. Rep from * 3 times more. 1 sc in each st to the hood. Working in ends of rows of the hood, 2 sc in the first row, 1 sc in each row to the last row. 2 sc in the last row.
  • Working down another front, 1 sc in each sc to first sc. Join. Fasten off. Sew buttons to correspond to buttonholes.
